Capital One Financial posted higher profit and revenue for the third quarter of 2026 as Discover deal momentum continued to build. Capital One Q3 earnings showed profit of $3.54 billion, or $5.61 a share, up from $3.19 billion, or $4.83 a share, a year earlier. On an adjusted basis, earnings per share reached $6.69, well above the $5.50 analysts expected, according to Dow Jones estimates. Revenue of $16.34 billion rose about 3 per cent sequentially and 6 per cent year on year, beating consensus, and shares jumped about 4 per cent in after-hours trading to $210. The results, for the quarter ended Sept. 30, marked another step in the bank's post-Discover transformation.
Capital One Q3 earnings beat on card strength and synergies
The beat was powered by the card business and by continued progress on the Discover deal. Chief executive Richard Fairbank said: "The Discover integration continues to go well and we're making good progress on delivering the expected synergies." The $35 billion Discover acquisition closed more than a year ago, and Discover integration synergies have reached $1.8 billion year to date, according to ScanX. Global payment network transaction volume reached $191 billion, up 25 per cent from a year earlier, after debit customers were converted to the Discover Network. The Capital One Q3 earnings beat reflected broad-based strength rather than a single one-off gain.
Credit quality continued to improve across the quarter ended Sept. 30. The provision for credit losses was $2.92 billion, down $73 million from the previous quarter, while the net interest margin widened to 8.41 per cent, up 40 basis points sequentially. The domestic card charge-off rate fell to 3.98 per cent, down 65 basis points from a year earlier, suggesting borrowers are coping better than feared. A stronger net interest margin combined with lower provisions helped lift earnings well beyond expectations.
Capital One Q3 earnings: capital strength supports growth
Capital strength also improved, with the CET1 capital ratio at 13.8 per cent, giving the McLean, Virginia-based lender a comfortable buffer above regulatory minimums. Richard Fairbank has long argued that the Discover combination would create a payments powerhouse, and the Capital One Q3 earnings numbers offer fresh evidence for that thesis. With debit customers now on the Discover Network, the bank can steer more volume through its own rails and capture economics that previously flowed to rivals. The CET1 ratio of 13.8 per cent leaves the bank well capitalised for buybacks and dividends, while the payments network gives Capital One a strategic asset few US banks can match.
Analysts noted that the quarter showed the benefits of scale arriving alongside improving credit. The quarter ended Sept. 30 is typically seasonally soft for card spending, yet Capital One Q3 earnings momentum held firm, helped by disciplined underwriting and the growing contribution of the payments network. Richard Fairbank said the bank remains focused on delivering the expected synergies while continuing to invest in technology and customer experience.
What Capital One Q3 earnings mean for investors
Investors rewarded the results, sending shares about 4 per cent higher in after-hours trading to $210. With Discover integration synergies accumulating and credit trends stable, analysts see room for further earnings momentum into 2027. The $35 billion Discover purchase, completed more than a year ago, was the largest US bank merger in years, and the latest report suggests the integration risk investors once feared is fading. The domestic card charge-off rate improvement, down 65 basis points year on year, removes one of the market's lingering worries about consumer stress. Overall, Capital One Q3 earnings confirmed that the Discover bet is paying off, and the market is pricing in more of the same.
