Airtel Voice-Only Plans: Rs 185 Recharge After TRAI Order

New Delhi — Bharti Airtel has become the first telecom operator to roll out voice-and-SMS-only prepaid plans, launching three Airtel voice-only plans priced at ₹185, ₹203 and ₹206 in line with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's new norms. The Airtel voice-only plans are now listed on the Airtel app and website.

Each of the three plans offers unlimited local, STD and roaming calls and 300 SMS, but no bundled mobile data. The ₹185 plan, the cheapest of the new offerings, is valid for 28 days. The ₹203 plan runs for 30 days, giving two extra days for ₹18 more, while the ₹206 plan is valid for one month — which differs from a fixed 30-day cycle as it renews on the same date each month. All three include free HelloTunes, allowing a new tune to be set every 30 days at no extra cost.

Airtel voice-only plans: who they are for

The new Airtel voice-only plans are aimed at users who mainly need calling and messaging, according to sources. That includes feature-phone users, people holding a secondary connection for calls, and those who depend largely on Wi-Fi for internet access — customers for whom bundled data adds little value but inflates the recharge cost.

Shorter-validity packs also let customers make smaller recharge commitments rather than paying upfront for a longer-duration plan. The voice and SMS plans give calling-focused users more flexibility within Airtel's prepaid portfolio, according to sources.

The Airtel Rs 185 plan is the entry point, and Airtel prepaid plans now form a clear ladder for non-data users: the Airtel Rs 185 plan for 28 days, then the Rs 203 and Rs 206 options for longer cycles. The Airtel voice-only plans strip out data entirely. These voice and SMS plans sit alongside Airtel's data-bundled packs, so existing Airtel prepaid plans customers can compare and switch without changing numbers.

Airtel voice-only plans: the TRAI mandate behind them

The launch follows TRAI's direction that operators expand their voice-and-SMS-only options with a corresponding reduction in tariffs. The TRAI mandate, issued in September, requires operators to issue special tariff vouchers (STVs) for voice calls and SMS at a lower cost, since they will not come bundled with data services.

Under TRAI's Telecom Consumers Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2026, telecom operators were asked to issue STVs for voice calls and SMS only, similar to the existing ones that come bundled with data, voice calls and SMS carrying validity of 30 days or less. "Provided also that the service provided shall offer special tariff vouchers (STVs) with appropriate reduction in tariff, exclusively for voice and SMS," TRAI had said.

Airtel voice-only plans: what rivals may do next

Airtel is the first operator to comply, and the question now is how quickly Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea follow with their own voice-only tariffs. The TRAI mandate applies across the industry, so matching plans are expected — the only variables are pricing and validity.

For consumers, the immediate impact is choice. Until now, prepaid users who only wanted calling had to buy data-bundled packs and pay for gigabytes they never used. The Airtel voice-only plans, starting at ₹185, finally separate the two. Whether the plans stay this cheap will depend on competitive response — but for now, Airtel has set the benchmark, and calling-focused customers are the winners.
