Car Buying 2026: Price Still Rules the US Auto Market
Bain's survey of 12,000+ car shoppers finds price drives 68% of US buyers, while AI tools reshape how younger consumers research their next vehicle.

Price remains the single most important factor in car buying across the United States and Europe, according to new research from Bain & Company released on October 21, even as artificial intelligence reshapes how younger consumers shop for vehicles. The findings suggest that despite years of technological upheaval in the auto industry, the sticker price still decides most deals.
The Bain automotive survey polled more than 12,000 vehicle buyers and found that 68 per cent of US car shoppers ranked price as their top consideration, followed by 62 per cent in Europe. China told a different story: there, technology was the leading factor for 58 per cent of buyers, underscoring how differently the world's largest car market weighs innovation against cost.
Car Buying Habits Shift as AI Enters the Showroom
One of the survey's most striking findings concerns how shoppers gather information before they ever visit a forecourt. More than 60 per cent of younger car shoppers now use AI tools to research vehicles, compare models and narrow their shortlists, a habit that is steadily changing the traditional car buying journey.
Dealers remain central to the transaction, however. The Bain automotive survey found that around 90 per cent of purchases still go through car dealerships, indicating that while research has moved online and into AI assistants, the final handshake overwhelmingly happens in person. For car dealerships, the message is clear: digital and AI-assisted shoppers still expect a physical point of sale.
Industry analysts say the numbers reflect a market caught between two forces. On one side, rising vehicle prices and higher borrowing costs have made affordability the defining concern for American and European households. On the other, rapid advances in driver-assistance systems, connectivity and electrification are pulling attention toward technology, particularly in China where domestic brands compete fiercely on features.
Why Price Dominates Car Buying Decisions in 2026
The dominance of price in car buying is hardly surprising given the economic backdrop. With the average transaction price of a new vehicle remaining elevated and interest rates keeping monthly payments high, budget discipline has become the primary filter through which car shoppers evaluate their options.
Bain's researchers note that the emphasis on price does not mean buyers are indifferent to quality or features. Rather, it suggests that once a vehicle clears a buyer's affordability threshold, other factors, from fuel economy to brand reputation, come into play. For manufacturers, the implication is that value positioning matters more than ever in Western markets.
The generational split is equally telling. Younger buyers are far more comfortable letting AI car research tools do the heavy lifting, from summarising reviews to comparing running costs. That behaviour is expected to accelerate as AI assistants become more capable and more deeply integrated into the shopping process.
What the Survey Means for Dealers and Manufacturers
For car dealerships, the survey offers both reassurance and a warning. The reassurance is that nearly nine in ten transactions still flow through their doors. The warning is that the customers walking through those doors are increasingly arriving with AI-generated shortlists and firm price expectations, leaving less room for old-style upselling.
Manufacturers targeting China will need a different playbook, one in which technology leadership, software features and smart-cockpit experiences take precedence over aggressive discounting. The 58 per cent figure for technology-first buyers there marks China as the clear outlier in global car buying behaviour.
Ultimately, the Bain automotive survey paints a picture of a global market that is fragmenting rather than converging. In the US and Europe, car buying in 2026 remains a price-led decision shaped by household budgets; in China, it is a technology-led choice shaped by innovation. The one constant is change itself, as AI car research continues to rewrite the car buying journey for every generation of buyers.
