Finance influencer arrest: YouTuber held over suicide

Police in Tamil Nadu have arrested YouTuber Jason Samuel Vijayakumar on charges of abetting the suicide of finance influencer V Harish, a 27-year-old creator with 1.3 million followers who was found dead at his rented home in Kanathur on October 20. Tambaram City Police announced the finance influencer arrest on Thursday, two days after Harish died.

An abetment of suicide case was registered at the Kanathur police station under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The complaint was filed by Harish's father, J Vinayagam, 51, who alleged sustained cyberbullying, defamatory content and threats that caused his son severe mental distress. The finance influencer arrest followed the father's complaint.

According to the police statement, Jason Samuel, 30, attempted to extort money from Harish and published defamatory videos about him on social media. Investigators said those posts were linked to the blocking of Harish's social media accounts, and that the distress this caused contributed to his death. Police said they relied on witness accounts and documentary evidence before making the arrest.

Samuel was produced before a judicial magistrate after the arrest on abetment of suicide charges and remanded in judicial custody. The New Indian Express reported that he was sent to Puzhal Central Prison.

The dispute behind the finance influencer arrest

The quarrel between the two men had played out in public in the days before Harish's death. The finance influencer arrest followed a public dispute that began with Samuel's video last week. Samuel, who is also the chief executive of venture studio Zemuria Inc, had posted a lengthy video last week accusing Harish of offering investment advice without holding a licence as a registered investment adviser with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). In the video, Samuel accused Harish of misrepresenting his credentials with the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) and of misleading the public with what he called a fake licence.

Samuel had previously denied the harassment allegations in a social media post, saying he had only questioned Harish's qualifications and authorisation to provide financial advice. Jason Samuel is also known online for videos calling out other content creators. In earlier statements carried by news agencies, he said he was acting in the consumer interest by pointing out that Harish lacked a SEBI-registered investment adviser licence.

Harish's main Instagram account was disabled by Meta following mass reports, and a replacement account he launched was also taken down. Reports said his accounts had faced earlier disruptions too, with blocks reported in September. Harish ran the "Finance with Harish" channel on YouTube and Instagram, where he shared investment advice and personal finance tips with an audience of about 13 lakh people. The Puducherry native had built that following over five years.

Dexerto reported that Harish had recorded a video before his death in which he discussed the alleged harassment and the damage to his reputation. His father has asked investigators to examine that recording and other digital evidence. Police recovered Harish's body and sent it to Chengalpattu Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

A wider debate after the finance influencer arrest

The case has put a fresh spotlight on India's fast-growing community of financial influencers and the rules around who can offer investment advice. SEBI has in recent years tightened norms on unregistered investment advice on social media. Harish's death and the finance influencer arrest that followed have intensified discussion on two fronts: the responsibility of finfluencers toward their followers, and the limits of public callouts by other creators.

Cyberbullying and creator mental health have come under renewed scrutiny as well. Police have not released further details of the evidence behind the finance influencer arrest. The investigation that led to the finance influencer arrest is continuing.
