Gold Stocks Rally as PC Jeweller Hits Record

Gold-related stocks glittered on Dalal Street on Friday as investors bet that curbs on gold investment products would push demand towards listed jewellers. PC Jeweller shares surged 18.68 per cent to a fresh 52-week high of Rs 17.15 on the NSE, while Senco Gold also moved sharply higher, as gold stocks across the board drew heavy buying interest ahead of the Diwali and wedding seasons. ## Gold stocks rally on the ETF channel shift The trigger was a change in how investors can access the yellow metal. Several fund houses halted new lump-sum subscriptions and fresh registrations into gold ETF Fund of Funds schemes, reportedly following regulatory guidance from the Securities and Exchange Board of India. The distinction matters: a gold ETF tracks gold prices directly and can still be bought on stock exchanges, while a Fund of Funds is a mutual fund that invests in ETF units. Existing investments and systematic investment plans remain unaffected. Market participants read the development as a potential tailwind for listed jewellery retailers, reasoning that investors seeking gold exposure may turn to jewellery companies instead. Shares of Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri, Lalithaa Jewellery Mart and Shanti Gold International also came into focus as traders weighed whether the shift in investment channels would lift demand for listed jewellery businesses during the festive quarter, giving gold stocks another leg up. ## PC Jeweller shares lead the gold stocks rally PC Jeweller was the standout. The stock opened with an upside gap at Rs 15.06 on the NSE against a previous close of Rs 14.45 and touched an intraday high of Rs 17.15, with more than 34 crore shares changing hands in heavy trading. The immediate spark was a bulk deal in which CUPID promoter Aditya Kumar Halwasia bought 5.10 crore shares at Rs 14.43 apiece. Analysts also pointed to the company's recently achieved debt-free status, expectations around its second-quarter results and business expansions in the pipeline. Senco Gold added to the momentum in gold stocks, trading around Rs 337 with a gain of about 5 per cent on the day, as festive demand expectations combined with broader sector rotation. The Kolkata-headquartered jeweller has been expanding its retail footprint and has benefited from steady wedding-season offtake, and Friday's move reflected renewed investor interest in organised jewellery retailers. ## Why gold stocks are shining this Diwali The timing of the rally is no coincidence. The festive and wedding seasons are the strongest demand periods for Indian jewellers, and expectations of robust retail offtake were already building before the gold ETF curbs added a fresh catalyst. Gold prices have remained elevated through the year, supporting both realisations for jewellers and investor appetite for the sector. The broader market backdrop also helped. The Nifty traded above 23,100 and the Sensex gained nearly 400 points on Friday, with sectoral momentum lifting several consumption-linked counters alongside the jewellers. For gold stocks specifically, the combination of a supply-side nudge from the ETF channel shift and demand-side optimism ahead of Diwali created the conditions for Friday's sharp moves. ## What investors should watch Analysts caution that the rally carries risks. Much of Friday's move in PC Jeweller shares was driven by a single bulk deal and short-term momentum, and such spikes can reverse quickly if buying interest fades. Valuations in parts of the sector have run ahead of earnings, and jewellery demand remains sensitive to gold price swings. Senco Gold and its peers will also be watched for how they convert festive footfall into sales. For now, the message from the market is clear: with the festive season approaching and gold investment channels in flux, gold stocks have found a fresh narrative. Whether Friday's gold stocks rally has staying power will depend on earnings delivery, and traders will watch Monday's session for confirmation.
