New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki market share climbed back above the 40 per cent mark in the first half of FY27, reaching 40.96 per cent on stronger dispatches across small cars, SUVs and CNG models, wholesale data analysed by Moneycontrol showed. The 2.25-percentage-point gain over the 38.71 per cent recorded a year earlier reverses a slide to 39.26 per cent in FY26, when SUV-focused rivals chipped away at its dominance. Tata Motors, meanwhile, lifted its share to 14.82 per cent from 13.32 per cent a year earlier to move past Mahindra & Mahindra as India's second-largest passenger vehicle maker by domestic wholesales. Mahindra's share fell to 13.58 per cent from 14.48 per cent, while Hyundai Motor India continued to lose ground, dropping to 11.57 per cent from 13.22 per cent. ## Maruti Suzuki market share rebound: the SUV and CNG effect The Maruti Suzuki market share recovery was powered by a broad-based lift in dispatches. The company raised output at its new manufacturing facility and benefited from revived demand for entry-level hatchbacks, a stronger SUV portfolio and its deep CNG line-up. On its October 1 sales call, the company named the updated Brezza SUV and Baleno hatchback as key demand drivers. The formula behind the Maruti Suzuki market share rebound has remained familiar: fuel-efficient powertrains, competitive pricing and a service network that reaches deep into small towns. That combination, over a refreshed SUV range, helped Maruti Suzuki market share retake the psychologically important 40 per cent mark. ## Tata Motors overtakes Mahindra in wholesale race Tata Motors overtakes Mahindra on the strength of updated mainstream models — the Tiago hatchback and the Punch SUV — alongside a growing portfolio of electric and CNG vehicles. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles managing director Shailesh Chandra credited the company's multi-powertrain strategy for keeping showrooms busy. The Maruti Suzuki market share revival, however, should not obscure how tight the chasing pack has become. Mahindra's slip reflects a fiercer field rather than weak volumes. The company remains the Indian market's SUV specialist, and the gap between the two homegrown rivals is narrow. It underlines how quickly momentum can shift when product cycles align. ## Hyundai market share decline deepens The Hyundai market share decline is becoming a structural concern for the Korean major. Its share has fallen from 13.92 per cent in FY25 to 12.60 per cent in FY26 and 11.57 per cent in H1 FY27. Having lost the number-two position in FY26, Hyundai is now squeezed from both sides. Kia, Hyundai's sister company, edged up to 6.40 per cent from 6.37 per cent, but the combined Korean share fell to 17.97 per cent from 19.60 per cent. The Hyundai market share decline reflects a product cadence that has not kept pace with domestic rivals' rapid refresh cycles, particularly in the compact SUV segment. ## Maruti Suzuki market share: what the numbers mean for buyers Industry-wide, India car sales H1 FY27 grew 28.3 per cent to 26,37,067 wholesale units between April and September 2026, against 20,55,122 units in the year-ago period, according to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. The figures cover dealer dispatches, excluding some luxury manufacturers. For buyers, the renewed Maruti Suzuki market share push means sharper pricing, richer features and aggressive festive offers as the leader defends its turf. The second-place contest is similarly good news for buyers: both are discounting and launching updates at a rare pace. If India car sales H1 FY27 trends hold through the festive quarter, the full year could be one of the strongest on record. The story is not finished, though: with Hyundai expected to refresh its SUV line-up and the Tata-Mahindra duel intensifying, the leader will need more than one strong half to lock in its 40 per cent-plus position. For now, the Maruti Suzuki market share story has reset the pecking order.
