Nifty Sensex Diwali cheer arrived early on Dalal Street as Indian benchmarks staged a powerful rally on October 15, 2026, shrugging off a deep sell-off across Asian markets. The BSE Sensex jumped 1,533.72 points, or 2.11 percent, to close at 74,315.61, while the Nifty 50 advanced 374.65 points, or 1.66 percent, to settle at 22,997.35, just shy of the Nifty 23000 levels it briefly crossed during the session in a broad-based advance.
The Diwali stock market 2026 rally stood out because it ran against the regional tide. Japan's Nikkei fell more than 5 percent and South Korea's Kospi plunged over 8 percent on the same day, after hotter-than-expected US inflation data rattled global investors. Indian equities, by contrast, found support in strong corporate earnings and domestic buying.
What Drove the Diwali Rally
Information technology stocks led the charge after Wipro reported second-quarter revenue of Rs 24,753 crore, up 9.1 percent year on year, beating estimates as European client spending revived. Nifty IT was the strongest sectoral gainer of the day in Thursday's session.
Heavyweight financials did the heavy lifting for the indices. ICICI Bank gained 3.80 percent to Rs 1,389.40, contributing about 80 points to the Nifty, while HDFC Bank added 2.27 percent. Reliance Industries rose 3.44 percent to Rs 1,215 on continued interest around the upcoming Jio Platforms IPO. Together, the three stocks accounted for more than half of the Nifty's advance.
The backdrop helped too. The rupee extended its winning run to a fifth straight session, closing 12 paise stronger at 95.05 against the US dollar, while Brent crude fell more than 2 percent to $103.55 a barrel. The India VIX, the market's fear gauge, declined more than 4 percent toward 14, signalling easing expectations of near-term volatility.
Nifty Sensex Diwali Outlook: Key Levels Investors Must Watch
Technically, the festive trade now hinges on whether the Nifty can hold above the Nifty 23000 levels and the Sensex above 74,000, both positive short-term developments. Near-term Nifty support sits at 22,900 to 22,950, followed by 22,750, with resistance at 23,050 to 23,150. The Sensex 74315 close leaves support at 73,900 to 74,100 and resistance at 74,600 to 74,900.
Thursday's session was also the Sensex weekly options expiry, when position adjustments can amplify moves, so analysts advise watching for follow-through buying rather than assuming the rally sustains itself. Twelve of sixteen major sectoral indices ended in positive territory, though mid-caps and small-caps lagged large-caps, a divergence that needs to close for a durable recovery.
Risks remain firmly on the radar for the Indian market outlook into Diwali. Foreign institutional investors have been net sellers, and global risk appetite stays fragile after US consumer inflation accelerated to 3.7 percent in September from 3.4 percent in August, reviving fears of further Federal Reserve rate hikes.
The earnings calendar will decide the next move. Investors will track quarterly results from Angel One, HDFC Asset Management, HDFC Life Insurance, Nestle India and Tech Mahindra in the coming sessions. In the primary market, IPOs including Tonbo Imaging India and Zetwerk are set to open for subscription.
For investors wondering whether markets will crash before Diwali, the honest answer is that the Diwali stock market 2026 setup now balances domestic earnings momentum against global rate expectations. A close above 23,000 on the Nifty with broad participation would strengthen the Indian market outlook and confirm the Sensex 74315 advance, while a failure to hold 22,900 could invite fresh selling.
