Electric cars India: Honda 0 Alpha debuts on Dec 2

The next wave of electric cars India will see is taking shape. Honda will debut the Honda 0 Alpha EV in the country on December 2, 2026, the company's first electric SUV for the Indian market, to be made locally at Tapukara in Rajasthan. It leads a crowded calendar of upcoming EVs that also includes Tata's Safari EV, the Mercedes GLC Electric and the Hyundai HE1i compact electric SUV. Three of the four will be made or assembled in India, which keeps them clear of full-import duties.

Electric cars India: Honda 0 Alpha

The Honda 0 Alpha is expected to be priced between Rs 17 lakh and Rs 30 lakh ex-showroom, putting it in the premium electric SUV space. That band sits above most mass-market electric SUVs on sale today and below the luxury imports, a space where Honda will compete on brand trust as much as on specifications. Honda has not released battery or range figures yet. Local manufacturing at Tapukara is the company's answer to keeping the price in check.

The December 2 debut makes Honda a late entrant to India's electric SUV race, arriving with a clean-sheet product in the busiest launch window electric cars India has seen. What buyers get for the Rs 17 lakh to Rs 30 lakh band will decide how the 0 Alpha is received.

Electric cars India: Tata Safari EV

Tata's answer is the Tata Safari EV, likely to debut during the 2026 festive season. It is expected to offer 65 kWh and 75 kWh battery options on Tata's Acti.ev+ platform, with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. Prices are expected to start at around Rs 25 lakh.

The Safari EV matters because the Safari name already carries weight with Indian SUV buyers. Three-row electric SUVs are still rare in India, so Tata would be opening a new corner of the market rather than fighting for an existing one. If Tata hits that price, the Tata Safari EV will have few direct rivals at launch.

Electric cars India: Mercedes GLC Electric and Hyundai HE1i

The Mercedes GLC Electric rolls out in November 2026, the earliest of the four new electric cars India is set to receive. It will be made locally, carries a 94 kWh battery and gets all-wheel drive. Local assembly should keep it sharper on price than a full import, though Mercedes has not announced figures. Mercedes has not published a range figure for the 94 kWh pack.

Hyundai's entry is the Hyundai HE1i, a compact electric SUV on the E-GMP (K) platform to be built in Tamil Nadu. It will come in Standard and Long Range trims with Level 2 ADAS. No launch date or price has been confirmed for the HE1i, the smallest of the new electric cars India will get, but the Tamil Nadu plant gives Hyundai a local manufacturing base for the model.

For buyers tracking upcoming EVs, the next six months of electric cars India has to offer look like the widest choice yet: a Honda electric SUV around Rs 17 lakh to Rs 30 lakh, a Tata three-row near Rs 25 lakh, a locally made Mercedes and a Hyundai compact SUV with Level 2 driver assistance. Prices and delivery timelines will be confirmed at each launch, starting with the GLC Electric in November and Honda's debut on December 2.
