IIT Madras will release a white paper on global artificial intelligence standards, the impact of AI on jobs across sectors and reskilling initiatives to help workers move to new roles. Director Veezhinathan Kamakoti announced the plan while speaking to ANI on the sidelines of AI Governance 2026 in Chennai on October 22. The IIT Madras AI white paper will be developed alongside a partnership with Better India to raise public awareness of AI.
Kamakoti said the institute is looking at four or five important areas. "Since AI has become all-pervasive today, we are looking at four or five important aspects today. One of the things is we want to create a massive awareness about AI, what AI can do good to the general human society," he said. He also highlighted the need to develop cost-effective AI solutions and establish global governance standards as the technology becomes part of everyday life. The institute is looking at four or five important areas, including awareness, cost-effective solutions and global standards. The institute wants the public to understand what AI can do for society.
IIT Madras AI white paper: jobs and reskilling
On employment, Kamakoti said efforts are underway to identify sectors likely to be affected by AI and assess the reskilling needed to help workers transition to other sectors. The paper will cover how AI affects work across sectors and what training programmes the shift will need, so that workers can move into new roles instead of being left behind by the change. The paper will also cover global AI standards and the training initiatives needed to help workers transition to new roles.
The training question sits at the centre of the announcement. As AI tools spread across sectors, workers in affected roles will need training for new kinds of work, and the white paper will look at what that training should cover. Kamakoti said the institute is working to identify which sectors are likely to be affected by AI and assess the training required to help workers move to other sectors.
Global standards for AI governance
Kamakoti called for a global consensus on AI standards and governance, saying mistakes made in one part of the world could have far-reaching consequences in other regions because technology is interconnected. He also emphasised the need for common global AI standards to ensure responsible use of the technology in an increasingly interconnected world, and said India should be part of the effort to build cost-effective AI solutions and governance frameworks. Kamakoti said the technology is interconnected, so governance choices in one region affect others.
IIT Madras AI white paper and public awareness
IIT Madras is collaborating with Better India to show real-world uses of AI across sectors. "So, we are now partnering with Better India and we'll be releasing 500 videos from different segments, applications where AI has been extremely useful in enhancing the quality of life," Kamakoti said. He added, "We are setting up large data centres and we can train up to some amount of parameters."
The 500 videos are planned across different segments and applications, showing where AI has been useful in improving quality of life. The partnership is aimed at public awareness, a theme Kamakoti returned to several times in his remarks. The announcement was made on the sidelines of AI Governance 2026 on October 22, and the white paper will add to the institute's work on AI awareness, jobs and training. The white paper will cover global AI standards, the impact of AI on jobs across sectors and training initiatives, and the partnership will support public awareness of AI.
