Four Institutes of National Importance are recruiting assistant professors, and the combined number of assistant professor posts is above 80, according to a roundup published on October 20, 2026. The institutes named are the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Mohali, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal and the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Surat.
India has more than 125 Institutes of National Importance, a group that includes IITs, NITs, IIITDMs and IIITs. The four recruitment drives cover teaching posts at different levels, but the bulk of the openings are at the entry teaching level.
The grade matters because it sets the pay level and the experience bar. Grade II posts at level 10 are the entry grade for new faculty, while Grade I posts at level 12 carry a higher bar.
Assistant professors at NIT Warangal and NIT Surat
NIT Warangal has advertised faculty posts across four levels: 24 assistant professor Grade II posts at pay level 10, 6 assistant professor Grade I posts at pay level 12, 3 associate professor posts and 1 professor post. The last date to apply online is November 30, 2026, at 11.59 pm IST.
A PhD in the relevant discipline is essential for all faculty levels there, with first class in the preceding degrees. Candidates who hold a PhD directly after a BE or BTech are also eligible, provided they have first class at the bachelor level.
NIT Surat, formally the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, is recruiting 17 assistant professors at Grade I, pay level 12. Online applications close on November 30, 2026, at 5 pm, and the downloaded signed application must reach the institute by December 7, 2026. Departments with openings include mechanical, electrical, electronics, chemical, computer science and engineering, artificial intelligence, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and humanities and social sciences.
The departments with openings there include biotechnology, civil engineering, chemical engineering, computer science and engineering, chemistry, electronics and communication engineering, electrical engineering, humanities and social sciences, mathematics, mechanical engineering, metallurgical and materials engineering, management studies, physics, computational and data science, and education. Assistant professors recruited through this drive will teach in these departments.
Candidates for NIT Surat are told to check the recruitment notice on the institute website for exact eligibility conditions and the application steps.
Assistant professors at IISER Mohali and IIT Kanpur
IISER Mohali is recruiting assistant professors with a last date of December 6, 2026, and IIT Kanpur is recruiting assistant professors with a last date of December 31, 2026, according to the same roundup. The roundup does not give post counts for these two institutes, so applicants should check the official notices for the number of posts and the departments.
The assistant professors recruited through these drives will work across engineering, science, mathematics, humanities and social sciences, and management, depending on the institute. Recruitment notices for NITs generally list posts department by department, with reservation applied as per rules, so applicants should read the seat matrix in the notice rather than relying on summary counts.
What applicants should check before applying
Deadlines differ by institute, and the Surat institute also asks for a hard copy after the online form. Applicants should confirm the post, department, pay level and last date in the official notice before paying a fee or sending documents.
The NIT Warangal notice is on nitw.ac.in and the Surat notice is on svnit.ac.in. Candidates should apply only through the official portals, since the notices carry the department-wise posts and the eligibility rules.
