September 2026 EV sales: Punch EV leads India

India dispatched 35,256 electric cars in September 2026, up 62% from 21,757 units a year earlier, according to model-wise dispatch data published by AutoPunditz on 25 October 2026. The September 2026 EV sales total added 13,499 units year on year, and the top 10 models alone accounted for 26,294 units, or about 74.6% of the volume covered by the data. Tata Motors stayed the largest maker, while Mahindra closed the gap, and a wider set of brands now contributes meaningful volume.

September 2026 EV sales: Punch EV at the top

The Tata Punch EV was India's best-selling electric car in the month, with 4,702 electric car dispatches. That was up from 1,223 units in September 2025, a rise of 284%, and it gave the model about 13.3% of the total. The Mahindra XEV 9S followed with 4,636 units, only 66 units behind the Punch EV, and it accounted for about 13.1% of the total. In the September 2026 EV sales ranking, the Tata Punch EV and the Mahindra XEV 9S together show how close the contest at the top has become, since two models from two domestic makers now sit almost level.

The Tata Nexon EV ranked third with 3,926 electric car dispatches, up 21% from 3,251 units a year earlier. The MG Windsor EV, which had led the segment in earlier months, slipped to fourth with 3,300 units, down 30% from 4,741 units in September 2025. The September 2026 EV sales top five closed with the Mahindra XEV 9e at 1,975 units, down 25% from 2,619 units, even as the newer Mahindra XEV 9S took far more volume within Mahindra's own range.

September 2026 EV sales: Tata and Mahindra makers

At maker level in the September 2026 EV sales data, Tata Motors dispatched 14,973 electric cars across seven models, up about 66% year on year, for a 42.5% share of the 30-model dataset. The Tata Punch EV and the Tata Nexon EV together contributed 8,628 units, or almost 58% of Tata's total. The Tata Sierra EV added 1,908 units in sixth place, and the Tata Curvv EV rose 309%, from 376 units to 1,536 units, but the Tata Harrier EV fell 39% to 1,452 units and the Tata Tiago EV fell 29% to 1,052 units, so growth inside Tata's range was uneven.

Mahindra dispatched 8,547 units across five models, up 91% year on year, for a 24.2% share. The XEV 9S alone contributed more than half of Mahindra's total. The Mahindra BE6 recorded 1,517 units, down 11% from 1,701 units, and the Mahindra XUV 3XO EV added 406 units. Together, Tata and Mahindra accounted for 23,520 units, or about two thirds of the volume in the dataset.

September 2026 EV sales: new brands gain ground

In the September 2026 EV sales maker ranking, MG Motor ranked third among makers with 4,558 units, down 26.4% from 6,194 units, as the MG Comet EV fell 19% to 978 units while the MG ZS EV rose 12% to 280 units. VinFast recorded 1,853 units, up from 376 units, led by the Limo Green with 850 units and the VF7 with 625 units. Kia recorded 1,681 units, with the Syros EV at 1,060 units and the Carens Clavis EV at 621 units. BYD delivered 1,137 units, with the Sealion 7 at 530 units and the Atto 3 at 519 units.

Maruti Suzuki entered the top 10 with the e Vitara at 1,342 units, or about 3.8% of the total, in a segment Tata, Mahindra and MG had long led. Hyundai recorded 944 units, with the Creta EV at 935 units, up 113% from 440 units. AutoPunditz notes that its tables come from a 30-model dispatch dataset, and that other September 2026 EV figures based on registrations use a different reporting basis and should not be compared directly with these dispatch figures. Buyers reading the September 2026 EV sales tables should therefore treat them as electric car dispatches to dealers, not as cars registered to customers in the same month.
