India's passenger vehicle sales September performance delivered a festive-season boost as domestic dispatches from manufacturers to dealers jumped 21.8 per cent year-on-year to 4,54,574 units, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on October 15. The figure compares with 3,73,347 units in September last year and marks one of the strongest monthly showings of the fiscal year.
The September SIAM auto sales data covered dispatches across segments. Total two-wheeler sales rose 13.5 per cent to 24.63 lakh units from 21.70 lakh units a year earlier, while three-wheeler dispatches to dealers were up 16 per cent at 98,162 units against 84,635 in September 2025. The broad-based growth, and the improving two-wheeler sales India trend, signals sustained consumer demand heading into the festive season.
Passenger vehicle sales September: what drove growth
Analysts attributed the passenger vehicle sales September surge to lower showroom prices following GST 2.0 changes, a low year-ago base, financing support, resilient rural and urban demand and infrastructure-led spending. SIAM also reported that domestic sales in the July-September quarter were the highest ever recorded for a second quarter, with total sales across categories at 83,87,938 units, up 18.2 per cent. The SIAM auto sales quarterly data showed passenger vehicle volumes of 13,60,687 units, up 30.7 per cent year-on-year.
Utility vehicles continued to dominate the mix, accounting for about 68 per cent of quarterly passenger vehicle volumes at 9,19,068 units, up 34.2 per cent. Passenger cars sold 3,98,631 units, up 24.9 per cent, while vans grew 15.3 per cent to 42,988 units. The quarterly mix behind the passenger vehicle sales September numbers confirms that utility vehicles remain the engine of India's car market.
The two-wheeler sales India momentum was not limited to September. In the July-September quarter, two-wheeler volumes grew 15.2 per cent year-on-year to 64.3 lakh units, with scooters leading the charge at 27.7 per cent growth to 26.6 lakh units and motorcycles rising 7.4 per cent to 36.2 lakh units. Three-wheeler sales rose 23.6 per cent to 2,85,342 units, supported by ICE demand, EV adoption and expansion in the cargo segment.
Electric vehicle sales record follows passenger vehicle sales September surge
Separately, the domestic electric vehicle market scaled its highest-ever monthly record in September, with total retail sales reaching 3,33,634 units, up 74 per cent year-on-year, according to data released earlier in October by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Overall EV penetration rose to about 13 per cent from 10 per cent a year earlier, and both electric two-wheelers and electric passenger vehicles posted all-time monthly highs. The electric vehicle sales record underlines how quickly India's auto electrification is moving, alongside the strong passenger vehicle sales September showing.
Not all trends pointed up. SIAM noted that passenger vehicle exports fell 5.2 per cent in the quarter to 2.29 lakh units, citing a high base and logistics constraints linked to the West Asia crisis. For April-September, passenger vehicle sales stood at 26,37,067 units, up 28.3 per cent, keeping the industry on course for a record fiscal year. With the passenger vehicle sales September tally now in, dealers enter the peak festive fortnight with healthy stock and stronger buyer sentiment than a year ago. Industry watchers say the passenger vehicle sales September numbers confirm the market's festive-season momentum is real.
