Tesla Roadster India Bookings Open at Rs 5.01 Lakh

The Tesla Roadster India story has taken a dramatic turn. Tesla has unveiled its long-awaited second-generation Roadster and opened online reservations in India, with an initial booking amount of Rs 5,01,000 for the Performance variant via the company's official India website. The announcement, made at a SpaceX facility in McGregor, Texas on October 15, ended nearly a decade of waiting since the concept was first shown in 2017.

The Tesla Roadster India reservation page lists three configurations: Performance, Thrust and Rocket. The two-seat Performance is described as a road-ready model with active aerodynamics and a multi-mode suction system. The Thrust variant adds acceleration thrusters for racetrack driving, while the single-seat Rocket, an invite-only model, will incorporate a full flight system and is not approved for public road use. Tesla Roadster booking totals reach Rs 50.06 lakh for Performance and Rs 2.50 crore for Thrust once the second instalment is paid within ten days, but these are reservation commitments, not the final selling price.

At the Tesla Roadster India unveiling, the company demonstrated the vehicle driving upside down along a specially designed ramp, performing aerial rotations and jumping over other vehicles using aerodynamic suction and compressed-gas thrusters developed with SpaceX engineering expertise. CEO Elon Musk celebrated the demonstration on X, writing: "Turns out the future does have flying cars." The Tesla flying car narrative immediately set social media alight, though engineers note the vehicle cannot sustain flight like an aircraft.

What the booking gets you

For Indian buyers, the Tesla Roadster India reservation structure is straightforward but demanding. The Performance variant requires Rs 5,01,000 upfront, followed by Rs 45,05,000 within ten days, a combined Rs 50.06 lakh commitment. The Thrust version needs a Rs 2.50 crore commitment on similar terms. Final ex-showroom and on-road prices remain unannounced, and import duties, taxes and registration will add substantially to the eventual cost. The Rocket variant cannot be booked at all; it is invite-only.

Production not before 2028

Tesla says Tesla Roadster 2028 production is the target, with initial output limited to left-hand-drive vehicles in Texas. Musk has acknowledged that success is not certain but excitement is, and given Tesla's history, the Roadster was originally promised for 2020, so the 2028 date should be treated as a target rather than a guarantee. The company has announced no Indian delivery timetable or right-hand-drive plan, suggesting Tesla Roadster India deliveries could land closer to 2030.

The flying car talk

Tesla lists claimed 0-100 kmph times of under 1.6 seconds for Performance, under 0.9 seconds for Thrust and under 0.59 seconds for the Rocket, with a top speed said to exceed 600 kmph, nearly a third of the speed of sound. Design inspiration comes from the SR-71 and F-35 aircraft. No flight-test results or certification details for the Rocket's full flight system were supplied, and questions remain about regulatory approval and road legality. The Tesla flying car is, for now, a reservation, not a car you can drive home.

For India's luxury EV buyers, the Tesla Roadster India launch is equal parts spectacle and speculation. With Tesla India also announcing complimentary Acceleration Boost for the six-seat Model Y L alongside the Roadster reveal, the brand is clearly courting the country's premium buyers. Whether the flying Roadster ever reaches Indian roads, the Tesla Roadster booking window has given enthusiasts something they have lacked for nine years: a date, a deposit and a dream. If Tesla Roadster 2028 production holds to schedule, certification and pricing will be the real tests.
