KOLKATA: The West Bengal cabinet has approved recruitment to 14,454 government posts and a Rs 50,000 financial assistance scheme for unmarried women pursuing higher education, giving fresh momentum to West Bengal jobs ahead of the festive season. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the decisions on Monday, October 5, after a cabinet meeting at the state secretariat, promising that the recruitment process would be completed within six to eight months.
Adhikari said the Public Service Commission and the State Police Recruitment Board would conduct examinations and complete the government recruitment process for the new vacancies. Officials said the West Bengal jobs drive is the first phase of a wider commitment to create one lakh government jobs in the state. The posts will be spread across departments including forests, fire services, prisons, home and hill affairs. "We had promised to provide one lakh government jobs in the state, and we are moving towards that goal," the chief minister said, adding that the PSC was now working at full strength to clear pending recruitment.
Adhikari blamed the previous Trinamool Congress government for depriving young people of jobs through OBC certificate complications and administrative failures, asserting recruitment would now move quickly. He also announced that appointment-related formalities for around 12,000 police posts would begin on October 11, with about 5,000 candidates expected to receive appointment letters at a programme on the same day. The state police's new emergency response number, 112, is scheduled to launch on October 10, coinciding with Mahalaya.
West Bengal Jobs: Where the 14,454 Posts Are
The approved vacancies cut across sought-after arms of the state government. The forest, fire services, prison, home and hill affairs departments will all see fresh recruitment, and officials say the drive is part of the one-lakh target announced in the state's 2026-27 Budget, which had set out plans to fill one lakh vacant positions across departments, with large allocations for education and police recruitment. For aspirants tracking West Bengal jobs, the six-to-eight-month timeline offers the first concrete schedule after years of stalled processes.
Bhagini Nivedita Scheme: Rs 50,000 for Women's Higher Education
Alongside the jobs announcement, the cabinet approved the Bhagini Nivedita scheme for unmarried women pursuing higher education. The scheme, expected to start in January 2027, will provide Rs 17,000 each in the first and second years and Rs 16,000 in the third year — Rs 50,000 in total over three years. Officials said the initiative, named for Sister Nivedita, aims to reduce financial barriers that force many young women to drop out of college. Suvendu Adhikari said the assistance would help young women complete their degrees without depending on family income alone.
The cabinet also raised the monthly remuneration of Karmabandhus, part-time support staff, from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000, and increased the food allowance for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students in government hostels from Rs 1,800 to Rs 3,300 per month.
Government Recruitment Timeline: What Happens Next
With cabinet approval in place, the focus shifts to execution. The PSC and the State Police Recruitment Board must notify vacancies, conduct examinations and complete appointments within the promised six-to-eight-month window — a pace that will test the capacity of both bodies. For the West Bengal jobs calendar, the October 11 programme, where thousands of police recruits are expected to receive appointment letters, will be the first visible milestone. For the government recruitment machinery, meeting the deadline matters: the announcements aim to deliver visible jobs and welfare before the Durga Puja season, and slippage could blunt their impact.
Why West Bengal Jobs Matter for Aspirants
For lakhs of job seekers, the announcement ends a long wait. West Bengal jobs have been mired in litigation and administrative delays for years, and many aspirants had begun to lose hope of regular government employment. If the latest West Bengal jobs announcement stays on schedule, the 14,454 posts plus separate police appointments could mark the state's largest single hiring push in recent years. The Bhagini Nivedita scheme, meanwhile, adds an education lifeline for young women, linking the jobs push to a longer-term investment in the state's female workforce.
Together, the recruitment drive and the education aid signal that West Bengal jobs are back on the political agenda — but aspirants will judge the promise by appointment letters, not announcements.
