Churachandpur district in Manipur has reported 3,713 dengue cases and nine deaths between April 1 and October 20 this year, according to NewsMobile. The figures span the monsoon and its aftermath. The Churachandpur dengue outbreak is far worse than last year, when the district recorded 332 cases across the whole of 2025.
About 910 dengue patients have been admitted to the district hospital's medicine and paediatric wards since April. The hospital reports a 99.67 per cent recovery rate among admitted patients. The district's data shows only four of the nine dengue deaths confirmed through ELISA testing so far, with five cases still pending.
Officials said the people who died had underlying health conditions, including liver and kidney disease and weakened immunity. The pattern suggests severe outcomes are concentrated among patients whose health was already fragile. Confirmation of the deaths matters because only lab-tested cases enter the official count: four of the nine dengue deaths have been confirmed through ELISA testing so far, with five cases still pending.
Why Churachandpur dengue cases surged this year
Health officials link the surge to the monsoon and poor drainage. Stagnant water in and around homes gives Aedes mosquitoes, which spread dengue, ideal breeding sites, and teams are now targeting the usual spots: open drains, discarded containers and waterlogged plots. Aedes aegypti, the main dengue vector, breeds in the clean stagnant water found in and around homes and workplaces. The case count began climbing soon after the rains set in, and the Churachandpur dengue tally kept rising through the post-monsoon weeks.
Manipur's hill districts have seen dengue spread beyond urban centres in recent years. The Manipur dengue response has shifted staff and medical supplies to Churachandpur as the Churachandpur dengue numbers climbed.
District hospital under pressure
The district hospital is handling the inflow through its medicine and paediatric wards. Mobile medical teams and dengue surveillance units have been deployed across the district to find cases early and clear breeding sites. Officials said dengue surveillance now covers both town wards and outlying villages.
Blood centre services in the district were restored after a licence renewal, officials said, easing the supply of blood products for severe cases. The renewal came as demand for platelets rose with the caseload. The district's blood bank had struggled during the worst weeks of the Churachandpur dengue surge.
The 99.67 per cent recovery rate among the 910 admitted patients suggests most cases are being caught and managed in time. Even so, the Churachandpur dengue outbreak has exposed gaps in vector control across the hill district, and the Manipur dengue response will continue through the post-monsoon weeks, officials said.
Churachandpur dengue: what residents are being asked to do
Officials have asked residents to empty water containers, cover storage tanks and clear clogged drains around their homes. People with high fever are being asked to seek testing rather than wait for symptoms to worsen. The advisory is routine during outbreaks, but officials say compliance decides whether the caseload falls.
For a district that saw 332 dengue cases in all of last year, 3,713 cases and nine dengue deaths in under seven months is a jolt. The Churachandpur dengue response will be judged on whether the death count stops at nine. District officials say the next few weeks, as the rains retreat, will show whether the outbreak is peaking.
